Character Background
• History: https://tfwiki.net/wiki/Scorponok_(G1)/2005_IDW_continuity
• Core Relationships:
Abraham Dante was one of the humans that Scorponok allied with after being so badly injured that only his head remained. Together, they developed the Headmaster program meant to integrate human and Cybertronian to become a more powerful being. Primarily, they were business partners working to gain the US government's trust to fund their nefarious plots. Dante was binary bonded to Scorponok for a significant amount of time that Scorponok could fool algorithms into thinking he wasn't fully Cybertronian even after they were separated. The successes he found with Dante led him to believe that his plans were all great and he was on the right track. Despite Scorponok only really being in it for himself, he can form some kind of friendship with some lab partners.
Grimlock was another former gladiator that opposed Scorponok throughout the war, and Scorponok considers him his arch enemy. Scorponok's plans as leader of the Decepticons was mainly thwarted by Grimlock and the Dynobots; as time went on, he offered Grimlock to join him and help him in his plans, though he also regarded him as the one Cybertronian he must finally overpower. Torturing him into giving up the Magnificence was one victory, but ultimately, Scorponok met his emotional demise at the hands of Grimlock's new band of friends.
The Firstborn is Scorponok's prototype for the ultimate project to revitalize the Cybertronian population. All of his efforts in finding new technology and funding was to create a hybrid organic-Cybertronian species that could propagate quickly so he can ultimately remove their Sparks and implant them into robot bodies. He saw her as an experiment, but as the comic implies and the author confirmed, he had some kind of caring feelings for her. The Scavengers stealing her from him was the first time we see him upset and dejected. His next appearance, working with The Grand Architect, has him wondering why he's even here anymore now that his life's work was taken away from him. As awful as this techno-geneticist is, he has the capacity to love his creations, in a twisted way.
Overall, Scorponok is a loner character. He has a tendency to discard others that he deems weak or unnecessary with a few exceptions, or he just creeps them out when he does want them to understand him. He has been upset at points when an alien lab partner was accidentally killed, but this is a rarity.
Character Personality Through Key Moments
(2+) Positive Experiences:
* Once Megatron lost his first fight against Optimus, he pulled a Starscream and tossed his injured body onto an inhospitable planet assuming that he would die there. He declared himself leader of the Decepticon faction, intimidating the rank and file into following his orders, and set about to blow up Energy processing facilities. Starscream repeatedly told him that his ideas were terrible and the other Decepticons thought poorly of him, but the didn't want to risk their lives by complaining.
In the beginning, Scorponok put very little thought in his plans - he was going to create world where the strong ruled the weak, regardless of how much Starscream told him everything he did was a terrible idea. He was only an ex-gladiator at that point, but his inability to really think through his plans continued throughout his life with minimal improvement. When given incredible power, he is prone to boasting and showing off his abilities and doesn't know how to actually lead a large group of people.
* The dying Cybertronian race, with a practically dead planet, lost any methods to grow their population, and Scorponok believed he himself will be the savior of his species. All of his work in selling advanced weapons to other planets and using the Headmaster program to gain government contracts was meant to fund this end-goal. This involved working on hundreds of smaller projects over hundreds of thousands of years.
This grandiose opinion of himself and his abilities can lead him to achieve anything, including creating a new type of organic lifeform that can create new Sparks at a rapid rate through reproduction. Scorponok has an odd obsession with organic biology, which leads to his disturbing work in building science babies and creeping out just about anyone that he comes across. At least he's shameless about what he's interested in.
(2+) Negative Experiences:
* The Scavengers stealing the Firstborn is the first time that Scorponok felt defeated - he had grown attached to the test tube baby he created, and despite his lofty speech explaining how she would repopulate the Decepticons, the team of Decepticons gave him no respect, mainly blowing him off and calling him creepy. He thought he was offering them a fun moral dilemma by choosing between joining him and keeping Grimlock alive, he hoped he could give a grand speech and amazing them, but ultimately he was defeated by someone tricking him into picking up a phone with prerecorded message that would paralyze him upon hearing it (long story how it got there). The Scavengers left him lying on the floor and picked up the Firstborn, running away easily.
Scorponok relishes in the dramatic. He wants to be noticed and revered. He wants emotional responses to his plans and offers. When he was ignored, he become frustrated, and when he fell for a simple trick, he was visibly distraught. Towards the end, he had some kind of parental feelings for The Firstborn, as twisted as it was, but most importantly, his pride was hurt.
* When it turned out that Megatron didn't die on Junkion and in fact returned alive and very angry, he put Scorponok under constant torture. From then on, Scorponok decided not to work as part of the Decepticons anymore, rather for himself, though still keeping the insignia. Once he escaped, however, he decided that he had to find a different path in life no matter how many people would hate it.
If Scorponok is one thing, he's persistent. No near-death or painful experience will teach him the error of his ways.
* After escaping Garrus-9, Shockwave fixed up Scorponok's body and took him and several other Decepticon and Autobot prisoners during a massive jailbreak. Along the way, two passengers discovered that they were to be used as bargaining chips when the DJD showed up. Shockwave hoped to trade their lives in exchange for his, which Flywheels and Flame relayed to Scorponok. He grabbed the two guys and jumped out of the airlock with them to avoid capture. It was successful, though they ended up floating around in space waiting to be picked up.
When push comes to shove, Scorponok is fine with cowardly maneuvers, and at times, survival is more important that sticking around any longer. However, at this point in his history, Scorponok can care about people that prove themselves to be trustworthy, though he won't go out of this way to save anyone else on board. Rather, he prefers to be sneaky about his maneuvers.
